Welcome to The Church of the Province of West Africa, a province of the Anglican Communion covering 17 dioceses in eight countries in West Africa:
St Nicholas serves as the Seminary for the whole of the Province, forming the next generation of deacons and priest in the work of God across West Africa and beyond.
The Church of the Province of West Africa is governed through two internal provinces, each led by a Metropolitan Archbishop:
Known as The Anglican Church of Ghana, the internal province of Ghana consists of 11 dioceses.
The Anglican Diocese of Cameroon is a diocese of the Church of the Province of West Africa, a member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its partner diocese is the Diocese of Chichester. It was created in 2008 and its current bishop is Dibo Thomas-Babyngton Elango
The Anglican Diocese of Freetown (Sierra Leone) was along with the Anglican Diocese of Bo, formed in 1981 by the partition of the previous Diocese of Sierra Leone, established in 1852. The current (2015) Bishop of Freetown is the Right Reverend Thomas Arnold Wilson, the third Bishop of the Diocese.
The Anglican Church of Guinea, Conakry, was founded on the first day of August 1985. The Diocesan Bishop Of Guinea is His Lordship Rt Rev Jacque Boston, the third Diocesan Guinean Bishop.
The Anglican Diocese of Bo was along with the Anglican Diocese of Freetown, formed in 1981 by the partition of the previous Diocese of Sierra Leone, established in 1852. The current (2008) Bishop of Bo is the Right Reverend Emmanuel Tucker.
The Diocese of Gambia, originally founded in 1935 as the Diocese of Gambia and Guinea comprises The Gambia, Senegal, and the Cape Verde Islands.
The Episcopal Diocese of Liberia, originally founded in 1851 by missionaries from the Episcopal Church in the USA.
A graduate of St Nicholas Seminary, Cape Coast, Archbishop Ben Smith was made a deacon in 1988 and subsequently priested in 1989. He was a Canon of the Cathedral Church of Saint Cyprian before being consecrated suffragan Bishop of Kumasi in May 2011 and enthroned as the first bishop of the new Diocese of Asante Mampong in 2014.
Beyond his formation at St Nicholas Seminary, Archbishop Ben Smith holds an MA in Religion from Asia United Theological College; an MA in Philosophy Research from the University of Wales in Cardiff, UK and holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from Manchester University in England.
